Nitroethane is a colorless oily liquid with a mild fruity smell. Nitroethane is an aliphatic nitro compound. Nitroethane dissolves well in water, well in organic solvents. It also dissolves in alkaline compounds. Reactive compound. When stored in light, it turns yellow due to the formation of soluble polymeric compounds. It is used as a propellant, and also as a solvent or or dissolvent agent for: cellulose esters, resins (vinyl and alkyd), waxes and in chemical synthesis. Due to the very good solubility in organic solvents it is included in mixed solvents as well as in catalytic systems, mainly due to the ability to dissolve aluminum chloride.
